Challenge: Create a state-of-the-art facility to replace existing facilities that are slated for demolition.
WHPacific, Inc. recently completed the design of the new McCarran International Airport Air Traffic Control complex in Las Vegas, Nevada. The facilities include the 32,773 s.f., 22-level Air Traffic Control Tower, adjacent 55,410 s.f., 4-story Base Building/TRACON facility, state-of-the-art guard station, and a two level parking structure.
Due to the secure nature of the facilities, force protection was a major design component incorporated into the buildings. Key security elements were added to assure operations would be protected in case of an explosive detonation or attack. Energy efficient “green” elements were also a significant design consideration in order to maintain costs in operating the facilities. Options of solar, wind, and energy efficient equipment were examined. Budget constraints limited our recommendations to the most economically feasible alternatives.
The estimated construction costs are approximately $46 million with final equipment installation and testing to be completed by March 2015.
