NANA Business Development: Force Multiplying Equals a Strong NANA

As the leader of NANA Development Corporation's strategy function, I know there are times when people across the company wonder what our role is in the company. It is about creating opportunity by looking at what NANA does, and where we can meet client needs and expand capabilities. It is about figuring out what we do well and why and finally, it is about identifying where we need to get better and how to do that. As Chief Strategy Officer that is a large part of what I do at NANA, and I could not do it well without your collective help. Whether you answer phones in Virginia, perform IT work in Kentucky, work on construction planning in Montana or do investment analysis in Alaska your input helps me and more importantly, is critical to NANA.

As of today, we have NANA team members in all 50 states and 7 countries. We are a $1.3 billion company on a path to grow almost tenfold in the next two decades. As we grow to a $10 billion company we need to find creative ways to utilize our strengths and grow the services we can provide.

Sometimes that is looking at new global markets, sometimes it as simple as looking at our own companies. It is called "force multiplying", and it's the collaboration and teaming of NANA companies to be stronger together than we would be working apart. To create opportunities for force multiplying, we hold a monthly meeting with representatives from all our businesses that include updates on the many wins and specific discussions about opportunities that our companies are pursuing together.

Then there are a few presentations on what a company can do. For example NMS provides security through Purcell Services and Pegasus Aircraft Maintenance transports pilots to and from the Anchorage International Airport and local hotels. When Pegasus and Purcell presented their capabilities to the force multiplying group, ideas came from every angle. Other NANA companies realized they could use those services or include in them in contract proposals and match Pegasus and Purcell with their clients.

This is an example of successful force multiplying and it is leading to great opportunities and accelerated growth for many of NANA's businesses. Another example is NANA WorleyParsons contracting with DOWL HKM to provide hydrologic and hydraulic engineering support services for analysis and repair of the Badami Weir (dam) on Alaska's North Slope. DOWL HKM would not have received this work without adding to their team the NANA WorleyParsons capabilities. The project helped build DOWL HKM's healthy Alaska hydrologic and hydraulic business and expanded its business resume.

Your willingness to work as a team and pass along prospects to help each other is a sign of a maturing company. It is a sign of growth in how we achieve the high expectations that we all set for ourselves. In addition, each of our companies is learning the strengths and the stories of their sister companies in NANA, and then leveraging the great strength of our team as One NANA to take a much more powerful story to the markets that we serve together.

So many of you across the NANA family of companies are force multipliers in your own right, proudly representing NANA in your profession and the communities you serve. You are listening for ways to open doors for you or others within the NANA portfolio. We thank you for that!

Joseph Iikuluk Luther Elected to NANA Development Corporation Board

When the NANA Regional Corporation (NRC) Board of Directors met in July, they elected Joseph Iikuluk Luther to fill the NDC board seat vacated by the passing of Lester Hadley, Sr.

Luther was elected to the NRC board in 2009, representing Noatak. He serves on several NRC committees, including: Shareholder Relations, Land & Natural Resources and Red Dog Management.

Joe, 47, has lived in Noatak his entire life. He credits his taatas (grandfathers), who raised him, for teaching him subsistence skills, like hunting, trapping and the spiritual values that called him to serve his community. He previously served as president of Noatak IRA. He and his wife, Mary, are raising their four children to practice Iñupiaq values and subsistence skills.

By trade, Joe is a certified carpenter and has worked for UIC Construction, LLC for more than 10 years. He worked on the new clinics in the region and several Kotzebue buildings. Joe graduated from Kiana High School and earned his certification in carpentry from the Alaska Technical Center in Kotzebue.

Alaska to Florida, NANA Pacific Helps Keep our Country Safe

It is early August, news reports say that a hurricane could hit Florida in 72 hours, border control from Texas to Arizona is at a fever pitch and thousands of people are attending a Boy Scout Jamboree in Virginia.

Keeping us safe is the singular goal of a group of men and woman monitoring all of it. NANA Pacific – a NANA company – is a key part of that team. It is a NANA Pacific contract with the National Guard that provides assistance to the Guard, Homeland Security and all states. At a little past six in the morning, Sherita Jackson gets to the office and gets a brief from her night shift counterpart. Her commute is about an hour, but Sherita doesn’t need coffee before starting the 12–hour shift. The gospel music she listens to on the drive from Fredericksburg, Va., to Crystal City, Va., and the work she does gives her inspiration.

Sherita works at the National Guard Bureau Joint Operations Coordination Center or NGB JoCC. Twenty people – about ten from NANA Pacific, a mix of military and civilians, work in Crystal City, Va. Sherita’s job is to gather and organize material from potential hot spots and National Guard units from around the United States so if a natural disaster strikes, the right people and equipment can respond immediately.

The NGB JoCC is manned 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year and receives information from all 50 states and four territories. The information from these areas comes to Sherita and her co-workers from Joint Force Headquarters State Joint Operations Centers or JFHQ JoCC. Each state and territory has at least one, and in some cases two, NANA Pacific employees working with National Guard soldiers to provide information identifying hotspots in their home state, and prepare to help people if disaster hits.

In all there are more than 81 NANA Pacific employees working for JFHQ JoCC. It could be a hurricane in Oklahoma, a forest fire in Alaska or a mud slide in California, in all instances NANA Pacific is part of the team to help keep people safe.

DOWL HKM Designs a Dream

For nearly 50 years, DOWL HKM’s roads, trails, airfields and civil site projects have transformed Alaska’s landscape but DOWL HKM’s president said it’s not every day that a road project makes history. "Most projects open with some fanfare but this road opening had meaning to people in Anchorage who may rarely use it," said Stewart Osgood, P.E.

On August 4, 2010, the Municipality of Anchorage celebrated the opening of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue and honored his memory and legacy. This month, the opening and naming was met with a party and community embrace with dignitaries, including Anchorage Mayor Dan Sullivan, Alaska Senator Bettye Davis, Alaska Federation of Natives Senior Vice President Nelson Angapak and Reverend Dr. Alonzo Patterson.

DOWL HKM’s part in the road was more technical than historical. Engineers at the firm designed the one-mile roadway that connects the intersection of Boniface Parkway to a new intersection on Elmore Road. The project is designed to improve east–west connectivity through Anchorage, to improve traffic circulation and to relieve congestion on Tudor Road.

Osgood says the project, which included the road, new pedestrian facilities, animal crossing and trail connections, fits into the natural surroundings. "We worked with the community including local businesses and trail users to design a project that meshed with existing uses," he said. "The end result is a project we can all be proud of, with a name we can only hope to live up to."

DOWL HKM is owned 51 percent by NANA Development Corporation and 49 percent by DOWL HKM managers.

DOWL HKM Opens Kodiak Office

Having worked with the City of Kodiak for years, Aaron Christie, P.E., was excited when he heard a home-grown Kodiak resident wanted to participate in the start-up of a new Kodiak office. "Natasha Hayden, E.I., had worked as a seasonal employee at DOWL HKM for two summers when she approached us with the idea to work on the island full-time," Christie said. "We love the community and have a great rapport with the city and thought this was an excellent opportunity to show a commitment to Kodiak."

Hayden worked in the Anchorage office for several months, learning DOWL HKM’s processes and familiarizing herself with its clients before resettling in Kodiak. "I am extremely appreciative DOWL HKM has given me this opportunity," Hayden said. "They provided all the support I need – both resources and senior support – to make it work."

While DOWL HKM has been part of the Kodiak community for years, this is the first time an office offering engineering services has been established on the island. "For years we had a test lab in town, and then for three consecutive summers we’ve had DOWL HKM civil engineers on the ground in Kodiak providing construction administration services," Christie said. "We pride ourselves on providing well-rounded, high-quality service for our clients. With an office in Kodiak, it means our level of service will be that much better."

As the sole engineering firm on the island, Hayden said folks in town are pleasantly surprised to hear DOWL HKM opened an office and staffed it with an Alaska Native from Kodiak Island. Hayden said it’s a destiny she played a major role in shaping. "The experience has exceeded my expectation. I hope my story helps other people in small towns in Alaska see that you can follow your own path and not let the lack of perceived opportunity stop you."

Christie sees the new office as a positive for Hayden, DOWL HKM and, of course, the clients in Kodiak. "There are small, rural communities on the Island of Kodiak we think are underserved," Christie said. "We hope to market our years of experience in Kodiak, depth and breadth of capabilities and local presence to expand outside the city and ensure DOWL HKM remains a permanent fixture in Kodiak."

Beacon Acquires WorkSafe, Inc.

After two decades meeting the drug-testing and occupational safety needs of Alaska businesses, WorkSafe has been acquired by Beacon Occupational Health and Safety Services.

NANA acquired WorkSafe in1996 and grew it to one of the state’s largest and most experienced drug-testing companies. WorkSafe provides more than 55,000 drug tests for upward of 2,500 Alaska businesses.

Established in 1999, Beacon employs 170 individuals. The company provides drug and alcohol testing, occupational health, family medicine, remote medical clinics, industrial hygiene, training, safety consulting and staffing throughout Alaska and the Lower 48. Beacon’s goal is to provide a safer, healthier environment for its clientele, including Alaska businesses and state, municipal and federal governments.

Five Rivers Donates to Iraqi Scouts

Bill Mansfield, an IT analyst with NDC subsidiary Five Rivers Services, has a tough job. Twelve hours a day, six days a week, Bill provides IT services to Camp Victory in Iraq. In his very limited free time he volunteers as a Scout Master for "Kashafa," the Iraqi Girl/Boy Scouts program. The Scouts are the school age children of Iraqi officers who live at Camp Cropper.

"Scouting was first established in Iraq 90 years ago," Bill said. "We are working hard in hopes of the program continuing forward after we wind down here to provide the youth the opportunity to grow in positive ways."

When Five Rivers President Colin Schmeisser heard Bill had compiled a "wish list" of sports equipment needed by Kashafa, he made it his mission to deliver ALL of the asked-for items.

Colin spoke with Dan Melchior, Akima’s senior vice president, about donating the sports equipment. Akima is the parent company of Five Rivers. Dan’s son is a Cub Scout in Virginia, so he was happy to work with Colin to get the requested items to Iraq. In fact, Dan coordinated with Bill and his son’s unit and the Kashafa are now "brother units."

Colin said once he received the wish list, it was relatively easy to amass the equipment which included squash rackets, pool cues, volleyball nets and more.

"The donation is about more than being a good corporate citizen," Colin said. "Our troops serve in a combat zone work 12 hours a day, six days a week. Being able to do something with young folks, like the Camp Victory Scouting program, is like a breath of fresh air. Seeing boys and girls running around with smiles on their faces – it really makes a difference."

RJ, a service desk technician, has 11 years of IT experience, including a year and a half with NANA. RJ previously worked aboard nuclear-powered submarines where he was known as a "bubblehead." RJ and the team provide outstanding support for our NANA customers.

IT Tip: Prevent the password reset headache

Reset Password

Computer system password expiration, while critical to the security of NANA’s information, can prove frustrating. Passwords for our networks, Costpoint, Time and Expense, expire after 90 days.

You can synchronize password expiration by changing all passwords the same day and scheduling a 90-day reminder in Outlook. In fact, we recommend giving yourself a one- or two-day "buffer" so system access isn’t interrupted. By synchronizing your passwords, you won’t be locked out of any critical systems or have to request an "I need a password reset" support ticket.

IT question of the month:

Q: Sometimes Costpoint says I am "working in an application from another workstation." What does this mean? I only have one computer.

A: If you exit the Costpoint application using the Windows close button – the "X" in the upper right-hand corner of the screen – instead of using the little blue "door" icon in the upper left-hand corner, the Costpoint session locks. This can also happen if you have a network issue or are disconnected from the system.

Try exiting from the system using the door icon. If you receive this message, it’s not because Costpoint thinks you have two computers, it’s because Costpoint thinks you are still logged into the system.

If you forget to log out properly and receive this message, contact Support as soon as possible either via e-mail support@nana.com or by calling (907) 265-HELP or (877) 690-2727 (toll free). We will quickly restore your ability to log on to Costpoint and answer any additional questions you may have.

Tips for a Healthy School Year

Healthy Kids

Children perform best with proper nutrition, plenty of sleep and regular physical activity, so follow these tips to ensure a healthy, safe and productive academic year:

Sleep

Between the ages of 6 and 9, most children need about 10 hours of sleep a night. Preteens need a little over nine hours. And don't forget about yourself. Adults need seven or eight hours of sleep to boost the immune system and help the nervous system function properly.

Nutrition

Feed children a variety of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, dairy products (milk, cheese and yogurt) and protein (nuts and seeds, eggs, beans, fish, fowl and meat) to ensure proper nutrition. Keep sugary and processed snacks to a minimum. School-age children require 1,600 to 2,500 calories per day while teen males can require as many as 2,500 to 3,000 calories per day, depending on activity level.

Exercise

Make sure your child gets at least one hour of exercise per day. This can include team sports, riding bikes or playing tag – any physical activity that keeps kids moving. Active youngsters are less likely to become overweight or develop type 2 diabetes, and more likely to have stronger muscles and bones.
