Client: United States Army
Akima Construction Services (ACS) is working on the $19.7 million project at Fort Hood to expand the Women's Health Center at Darnall Army Medical Center. The Women’s Health Center, slated for completion in the spring of 2010, will provide increased space for maternal inpatient and outpatient services. ACS will construct a two-story addition to the east side of the medical center, adding about 50,000 square feet. The first floor will consist of a 20,000-square-foot, full-service obstetrics and gynecology clinic. The second floor will consist of nine labor and delivery birthing suites. Each 450-square-foot suite will have exterior-facing windows and ample space for mothers. There will be additional sleeping space within the suite for fathers. The current labor and delivery rooms are in the building's interior and have no windows. The rooms are only about 225 square feet and provide no additional room for fathers. More than 200,000 soldiers have deployed from Fort Hood since 2003. The average number of babies born per month at Darnall Army Medical Center is 250. Nine months after troops redeploy, the number increases to about 500, driving the need for the project.
